It’s National Garden Month, and here in Florida, we are lucky in several ways when it comes to gardening. Not only can we garden 365 days a year, but we can also grow a wide variety of plants.

Since Brevard County is situated at the southern end of the temperate zone and the northern end of the tropical zone, we can grow a larger variety of plants than areas north and south of us. Gardening also provides many health benefits that can be divided into two groups: physical and mental.

As gardeners, we do a lot of weeding, digging, planting, pruning, raking, etc., and that exercise burns calories. It is estimated that one hour of light yard work or gardening can burn approximately 330 calories.
